One last ride

I've been on a non-stop carousel ride lately. Up and down, round and round, the wind blowing through my hair. And during the ride, I manage to catch a quick glimpse of all the things I'd like to do:
1. plan new classes
2. visit my dear friend and her delicious little newborn
3. complete projects
4. organize my studio
5. finish planting my garden
6. plan our summer vacation

I have to admit, I have been struggling lately with organizing myself and getting it all done. I've been on the hunt for some extra energy but by the end of each night, I just find myself nodding off in my new comfy couch and reassuring myself, "Tomorrow."

A lot of my "to do" list has taken a back seat to Talia. My little lady is even more on my mind these days. These are the last few months we have together before she boards the big yellow bus and starts Kindergarten in September. It is such a bitter sweet time, and one that I have been warned about by so many mothers before me...

"It goes so fast."
"They grow up so quickly."

It's all true.

And, so I have decided to jump on the carousel with my little girl and enjoy this last ride together. I'm soaking it all in and chreshing every last second, all the while feeling so blessed for all the time we have had together.

So, if you haven't heard from me in awhile or you're still waiting for me to announce my next class (thanks for all the inquiries!), please bear with me...I've been a little busy swirling and whirling around with my favorite little girl!

Annual Scrapbooking Weekend

For the past three years, my girlfriends and I pack up our cars with every scrapbooking tool, accessory and piece of patterned paper in our possession and head upstate into the Catskill mountains for a weekend of creativity, relaxation and fun!

This year was an extra special weekend for us, as we celebrated with our friends Tracey & Karina, as they hosted their first weekend crop! All their hard work paid off, it was an incredible weekend. I hope some more of you will join us next year.

We spent the weekend at Soyuzivka, a year round Ukranian resort nestled in the Catskill mountains in Kerhonkson, NY.
Tracey & Karina were gracious enough to allow me to set up shop at the crop. I was thrilled to spread the word about Memory Works and share all of my newfound favorite products. Here are a few photos of my first ever vending display:

During the crop, I held a raffle where Danielle won $106 in Memory Works products. And I was delighted to see Tracey's mom walk away with my Door Prize Gift Basket filled with a scrapbook, cardstock, paper theme set & other Memory Works accessories and tools!

In between scrapping, we had the most delcious family style meals. It was heaven having 20+ moms in the room and not one of us had to slave away in the kitchen or wash a dirty dish! We loved having our own bartender, which I am fairly confident, helped fuel our midnight dance party. :0) We love you Ga Ga!

I have always felt completely at ease in the mountains... I am sure it stems from the years spent at our family's cabin(that my father built with his own hands) just before I was born. I always loved walking in the woods... the gurgling streams, the padded paths of fallen leaves, majestc trees that protected a vast, tranquil playground. It didn't take me long before I decided to take a hike on the grounds. I grabbed Allison and Michele and off we went. Here is what we found:

An afternoon with the Girl Scouts

I don't remember wearing the classic green Girl Scout uniform, but I do vividly remember being a Brownie. My mom was one of the troop leaders and I really enjoyed spending time with my friends and working together. I vividly remember those little brown beanies, earning patches for my sash, Girl Scout cookies piled high in my orange living room and oh, that song! That infamous song. I wonder if they still sing it?

I was flooded with these memories after recently being asked to teach a local Girl Scout Troop how to scrapbook. I opted to design a Brown Paper Bag Scrapbook for them. I chose this design to help them understand the basics of scrapbooking and walk away with a complete book of their own. Ahead of time, they decided on a Dog & Friendship combination theme. Can it get any better than that??? :0)

It was really fun designing a girly scrapbook with lots of little unique accents... like dogbone shaped journaling tags and best friend paper charms, inspired by a best friend necklace I once wore when I was close to their age. The girls learned about matting, stamping, journaling, embellishing and paper piecing... and they were pros! I was genuinely impressed with their level of creativity and willingness to try something new. When they were worried about "messing up" or something didn't quite turn out they way they thought, I asked them to see this as a "happy accident." (An idea someone once shared with me). I showed them one of my own layouts, where I accidentally ripped my cardstock and explained how this one tear wound up inspiring a complete distressed transformation to my original layout idea. To this day, it is one of my favorite layouts!

So here is a photo of their finsihed projects:

My sample is in the center, with the Poodle on the cover. Take a look at how the girls made thier books their own! Not one of them copied my design entirely... I was pleasantly surprised. I remember being ten and how important it felt to fit in. Yet these girls were confident enough to be different from each other, and from me! It made my heart full.

I am lucky to be part of an amazing circle of friends who share scrapbooking as a hobby. Scrapbooking has been a way for us to break away for our busy lives and reconnect with each other and reflect on all of our special moments in between carpools and cooking dinner. And while these young girls were scrapbooking, I was transported back in time for a moment. I could see myself sitting around with my girlfriends. And while I didn't know any of them at age ten, I could easily envision us gathered around a table just like theirs...talking about things just like them. I was struck by how, even at the age of ten, this process of gathering and being creative together seemed to provide a forum for them to talk about things that were on their minds... a recent Health test, family life, someone who bothered them at school, and who they hoped would win American Idol.

My afternoon spent with the Girl Scouts was wonderful, and an experience that I will never forget...scout's honor! :0)

Happy Valentine's Day!

I used to love Valentine's Day when I was a little girl. It was always so exciting to get little valentine cards from my classmates. Talia's teachers are wonderful and continue traditions like this. Each child is asked to bring in Valentine cards for each of their classmates and then they insert them into an adorable classroom mailbox. So cute!

This year, I decided to make a simple card with a little extra special touch. Thank God for my Cricut! Talia loved them and I hope her classmates do too. It is such a simple card to make. Just cut out the hearts and punch two holes to slip your pencil through. Talia and I added a special Valentine's message on the back of each heart.

Trick or Treat

So, I am a few months behind in my own scrapbooking. But, here is a look at what I came up with. I designed this layout for a Memory Works challenge using all Memory Works products. I love how it came out. I didn't win the challenge but I had a lot of fun trying something new. Enjoy!

Tonight was another creative night in the studio. This time, Lisa and Allie joined me for my "Be Mine" Valentine's themed class. I knew it was going to be a great night when my brownies turned out perfect and the girls showed up with a bottle of wine in hand. (Thanks girls!!! Sipping as I blog right now...)

In between all the laughing and storytelling and sipping ;0) we managed to whip up some adorable projects... altered tin mailboxes, conversation heart candy bags and a handful of love notes. Here are Lisa and Allie proudly sharing their creations...great job girls!

It's hard not to fall in love with Memoy Work's products! I think Allison's face below says it all. :0) Memory Works has just released some brand new merchandise...this stuff is GORGEOUS!

The BEST Saturday I have had in a long time!

I am still giddy about this past Saturday... it was filled with new experineces and new friends and lots of creativity! I just had to share...

Pete and I enjoyed a wonderful day in Manhattan. He surprised me with tickets to see West Side Story on Broadway. Gotta love him! He really is amazing. I am super spoiled. We drove in early to take advantage of our child-free day. We explored the Guggenheim Musem for the first time together. It was amazing to be inches away from Picasso's masterpieces and surrounded by so much creative energy. My two favorite pieces were "Helene with Colored Turban" by Alexej von Jawlensky and "Woman Ironing" by Picasso.

We hopped in a cab and headed back to Times Square for a bite to eat at a great Irish Pub. Then, it was off to see
The show was amazing! The music was phenomenal, and oh... the dancing! I fell in love with this classic love story all over again. Karen Olivo, starring in her role as Anita, was a show stopper. She was so fiery and passionate...my favorite, by far.

When Pete purchased our tickets, he had no idea that I had already registered for an all-day crop in New Jersey. He was such a good sport... he drove me all the way to the crop in East Rutherford, NJ after our show so I could still have some fun. I did mention how spoiled I am, right?
I am soooo happy that I was able to make it. The Cropper's Delight Scrapbooking Crop was so amazing. The crop was actually for the entire weekend, but I opted to go for the day with my friend, Allison. The hosts, Meryle and Susie (seen below) were so welcoming and funny.

The theme of the crop was "Under the Big Top" and they had carnival games set up for people to win raffle tickets for prizes. They had a DJ during the entire crop playing my favorites (Ga Ga, anyone?) and provided cotton candy, fried oreos, homemade zeppolis and popcorn, in addition to the fully catered meals! The people there were fantastic...sooo friendly, outgoing and creative. Everyone was upbeat and having a ball... it was infectious! There were a slew of scrapbooking and non-scrapbooking vendors there, including my all time favorite, Scentsy!

I even loved the little touches...waterbottle gifts for everyone, garbage bags taped to the tables at every seat, getting everyone together for a group photo. It was a great time with great people! Here are a few of my favorite pics:

One of the highlights of the crop were the endless prizes being given away. Everyone was entered into the raffles and you had the chance to earn extra raffle tickets throughout the weekend. They even raffled off a GYPSY (retails for over $300!) And guess who won??? You got it, ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am thrilled to be a Gypsy owner. I always dreamed about owning one and I can't wait to see where this takes me and my business! I will be back for some more Cropper's Delight fun! Hope some of you will join me at an upcoming crop! You'l have the best time... I'd be willing to bet my Gypsy on it! LOL

My Lazy Sunday Creation

Yesterday, was a lazy Sunday. I spent a little time in my studio and made a Paper Bag Scrapbook highlighting a special Winter day... Talia's first time sledding with Uncle James. :0)

This scrapbook is made from two brown paper lunchbags...yes, you heard me right! I used the 3 Bugs in a Rug "Simple Pleasures" theme set and Prism Cardstock that we sell at Memory Works. I LOVE the colors of this theme set and simply adore the coordinating stickers (you'll see a few here too!). I am a mom, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a social worker, a business owner, a consultant and a friend. Some days I feel like I am in a million places at once....constantly on the go. Checking off my "to-do" list...making phone calls, writing case notes, checking emails, scheduling doctors appointments, cooking dinner. You get the picture.

With so much going on, the last thing I wanted to do was bake a cake last night. But, we were clebrating Talia's birthday this weekend and I wanted to make it extra special. The look on her face when I showed her the cake when she woke up this morning completely made up for my lack of sleep. To see her smile and excitement, made it all worthwhile. Truth is, I would go without sleep for the rest of my life if it brought my daughter joy. She is what truly sparks my creativity. She has been the focus of all of my creative efforts for the last five years...handmade costumes, scrapbook layouts, pajama play-doh playdates...

These last five years have been such a gift. I can't wait to see what creative adventures lie ahead of us! Happy Birthday baby girl!

This past weekend, I was wrapping a present I made for my friend Dawn's Baby Shower. T came into my studio and asked what I was doing. Of course, she wanted to help. After explaining that this was a one-woman job, I prompted her to make a gift for Dawn. She flew into her playroom and quietly went to work. Talia met me upstairs with this picture in hand. I couldn't believe my eyes.

She commented, "Look Mommy...it's Dawn, Jon and Dawn's baby in her belly...like I was in your belly!" :0) It's hard to imagine that my "baby" will be turning five in less than a week. It feels like only yesterday that I held her in my arms for the first time.

This Valentine's Day, Let's All Get Together and Make Love

Last year, I was fortunate enough to be hired to make a scrapbook for actor & Tony-nominated Broadway performer, Craig Bierko. I received an email from his mother today, with an attachment written by Craig. With her permission, I am posting it to my blog.

Craig's creative fundraising idea makes so much sense and Pete and I have quickly climbed on board. I hope you all do too.

This Valentine's Day, Let's All Get Together and Make Love

Like most Americans I have been horrified by the devastation in Haiti - and deeply moved by the waves of humanitarian compassion, a significant portion inspired by celebrities like my friend Alyssa Milano who challenged corporations to match her generous donation of $50,000.

These are difficult times for many people financially and yet many are finding a way to participate by texting ten dollar donations through the Red Cross, Yele and other charities offering immediate, desperately needed aid.

Sadly, according to reports from Haiti, the state of emergency is long from over - and, in the words of a newly arrived humanitarian volunteer, recovery will not be a sprint but a marathon.

Last night I made a donation while watching CNN. A young girl had been trapped between two massive sheets of collapsed cement. She was terrified and the rescue workers kept her spirits high as they labored to free her, which they eventually did. Overcrowded conditions and the general mayhem of disaster complicated her delivery to a hospital and, by the time rescuers finally got her to a doctor the young girl had died.

My heart ached for this child - and it broke for her injured mother who was too weak to be told the news just yet.

I thought of my mother, my nieces, my beautiful girlfriend Meg and our dog Boo. I felt my heart swell to the point of bursting because all of the beautiful ladies in my life were healthy and out of harm's way tonight.

And that's when the ache in my heart became an idea.

Valentine's Day is approaching - a day reserved for couples to celebrate their love for one another by giving flowers, candy, sharing a romantic dinner, exchanging gifts or spending a night in some cozy out of the way hotel.

I am suggesting we dedicate Valentine's Day to those men and women who lost the love of their lives this week - or, right this moment, await news regarding a husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend or child.

I'm not talking about romance - I'm talking about love.

And I'm talking about money. The money you'd spend on the flowers, the candy, the dinner, the cozy out of the way hotel. That money.

Ladies, take your boyfriend or husband by the hand and tell him that instead of roses, candy and dinner, you prefer to celebrate the miracle of love this year by giving - together, as a couple.

Let's unite our hearts - right now, today - and offer a piece of the love in our own lives to those who need it desperately.

Gay, straight, Republican, Democrat, high school sweethearts, elderly and middle-aged couples alike - let's celebrate this Valentine's Day early by making love now.

Ladies, you know that this will be a lot easier if it comes from you, not us. Let your man know you'd like to donate the money you'd spend on indulging romance - and offer it together as a gesture of gratefulness for your good fortune - and in the name of those who suffer alone in misery.

Helping Haiti

I hosted my third Memory Works Class tonight and this time, our class had a bit more meaning. Earlier this week, Haiti was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake. We have all seen the photos and watched the media reports. It has been hard for me to fight back the tears. To imagine your world crumbling around you...the enormous sense of helplessness and vulnerability scares me just thinking about it. How blessed we all are to be safe and comfortable tonight, surrounded by the ones we love.

Earlier today, I decided that I would donate 100% of the money I earned from tonight's class to Americares. I am happy to report that we raised $60 in total. I wish we could do more, but I can rest knowing that somewhere, somehow, even in the smallest way, we helped someone. I encourage all of you to take a minute and donate a few dollars to a reputable organization helping in the relief effort. If you are unable to donate your money, consider saying a prayer or volunteering in your community.

Thanks to Joe, Michele, Allison & Angela for joining me tonight. Their creativity was exciting to witness.

Tonight's class seemed fitting... we designed magnetic calendars and 2010 Planners. As we look ahead, I hope 2010 brings hope and revitalization to the people of Haiti. Hold your loved ones a little tighter tonight. Have a bit more patience with your children. Call your parents and Grandparents. Cherish every second we have...because as we have learned, it all can be over in an instant.

"Lift the Flap" Board Book

I am so excited to share photos of my latest project with you! My girlfriend Dawn is expecting her fist child, a baby boy, in a few weeks. Her baby shower is this Saturday and I wanted to make something special for her son. (I am crossing my fingers she won't see these pics before her shower. I just couldn't resist posting them!)

I came across this board book on Oriental Trading's website and thought it would be perfect. Dawn is a teacher, and I know she understands the importance of books for children. Underneath the tabs, I plan on putting photos of Dawn, and her husband, Jon, along with other people from their family. Enjoy!!!

I designed this book using:

1. (On the cover) "Stick With It" adhesive letters and sugar coating glitter from Doodlebug Design, Inc. Peel and stick these adhesive letters and then remove the top film and add your glitter...lots of fun to do! We sell these at Memory Works, order them from me today!
2. The "Animal Cookies" paper kit from Close to My Heart. (I won this at a crop once and thought the bright colors would be sure to capture the little guy's attention!)

Exactly what items come in the kit?

What is the quality of the cardstock items?
~ I haven’t personally seen the kit, of course, but the Simple Stories blog states that “you’ll love the quality of this super-thick, heavy-weight cardstock!”

Are the cardstock items pre-cut?
~ No, they will come as a 12×12 sheet and you will cut them apart yourself. They are sized to fit perfectly within the pockets of the WRMK divided page protectors.

Will this kit allow me to scrapbook an entire year’s worth of photos or an entire Project 365?
~ This truly depends on how generously or sparingly your use the elements of the kit, and how many photos you include in your project. For example, if you’re doing a “year in review” type of album, the kit does include (12) Monthly Title Cards with a spot for journaling on the back (which would show on the next page in your album). Everything is double-sided, so it does “double duty” in your album. With all the additional elements and patterned paper provided, I would feel comfortable saying you could complete an entire “Year in Review” album with just this one “Life Documented” kit.

But that’s just my own judgement … You do what you feel is right for you. If you feel safer ordering 2 kits right from the get-go, I would do that. If you have extras leftover at the end of your project, whatever it may be, you can certainly use these elements on regular scrapbook page layouts.

Are the pockets on the front, back, or both sides of the page protectors?
The pockets themselves are on the front side of the protector only; the back side of the protector is smooth. Obviously, whatever you put in the pockets, the backside of that will show on the next page of your album (if that makes sense, LOL!). Happy New Year everyone! This year, we rang in the New Year with our friends: Spencer, Allison & Katie. The girls were so excited to be able to stay up late to watch the ball drop. In order to pass some time, I pulled out some craft supplies (construction paper, feathers, pipe cleaners and yarn) and helped the girls design their very own New Years Eve hats. We all loved them so much that we had to design one for everyone that night. The dads were great sports...but Abuelo was the star of the night, sporting his enormous hat! Making and wearing the hats really put us in the mood to be silly and celebrate. It was the perfect way to start2010!

P.S. And yes, I am a New years baby!

Playing Catch Up

Whew! This month was a doozy, as I'm sure it was for most of you. In the midst of it all, I had the chance to get a little creative with some holiday cards & gifts and also, grabbed my camera to snap a few shots of T in all her creative glory. She really is amazing and quite the budding artist. I can't tell you how happy this makes me! :0)
I held my second Memory Works Class in December. We made Holiday treat bags, gift card holders and mini gift cards. Sherry, Maggie & Allison were a blast to work with and I was excited by their creativity and the personal touches they added to their designs. Here, Sherry & Maggie hold up their treat bag toppers that we later attached to clear cello bags that we filled with a variety of holiday candies & treats.

The red and green cards pictured here were designed for T's teachers. I really enjoyed making these cards. I tried to be a little more relaxed when it came to adding the black ink to give the cards a weathered/distressed look. I dragged the edges of the cards across a black ink pad to give it this look. I really liked how the black contrasted with the vibrant green and red. And to add even more contrast, I decided to add some glitter accents. These are hard to see in these photos, but, trust me, they looked amazing in person.

T's teacher encouraged the children to send in Christmas cards for their classmates. Each child deposited their cards into a pretend mailbox located in their classroom. Then, they were sorted and sent home in these adorable reindeer bags the children had made. T was so excited about the cards I made for her friends. Her teacher said she was very proud of them...naturally, that made me feel wonderful. I LOVE the bright winter colors from this paper set from My Mind's Eye Collection, offered through Memory Works. I added lollipops for an extra sweet holiday treat for the kids.
This Christmas, my father-in-law asked that I design a special wall hanging for our relatives in Ecuador. I used a photo taken at the cemetary of T while paying her Abuela a visit. On this day, T asked that I take a picture of her with her Abuela, as she quickly leaned in and wrapped her arms around her headstone. It was a bittersweet moment, for sure. We all miss Abulea very much and this holiday season was particularly tough for our family. But, creating a special gift which focused on the love T and her Abuela shared, made it a little bit easier.

Our family has a bunch of Christmas traditions... lasagna, fresh Christmas trees, annual ornaments, etc. I love the traditions and family togetherness. For me, it is what makes Christmas so magical. This year, I decided to begn a new tradtion for my nephews. I designed this advent calendar for my sister, in hopes that it would bring her sons much joy as they wait for Jesus' birth and the arrival of Christmas.

I placed a Memory Works order for this project right away! I knew that Basic Grey's "Eskimo Kisses" theme set would look fabulous on all the small boxes. I used Tim Holtz's Crackle Paint (Rock Candy) for the first time on the chipboard letters and LOVED how it came out. I have a feeling this product will be one of my new addictions! It was so easy. Just apply it generously with the brush provided and wait for it to dry! As it dries, it creates a crackle finish. I inked over the crackle to enhance it. I also added a little bling to the design by using Zva's Self adhesive crystals on the three dimensional ornament I created.

Lately, T has focused her artistic energy on creating penguins. She loves penguins and has toted a stuffed animal named "Penguina" around with her all month. I am so proud that T has the confidence to try to draw new things. She is starting to break things down piece by piece when she draws. In the first photo, T traced Penguina's feet and then drew the rest of her body parts freehand and colored them in. In the next photo, she took Penguina and outlined her body on the Doodleboard and then added all her features independently. She is so proud of her work and her confidence in her ability is growing. She loves sharing her creations with me.

The Blizzard in NY gave me an excuse to lock myself in my studio and get creative... but, of course, I needed a snow break. T LOVED the snow this year. And, while I was combing through the garage trying to find our ice scrapers for the cars, I passed by T's beach toys and had an "aha moment"...I grabbed a few and told T we could make snow castles. She had a blast!

We spent Christmas Eve with my husband's side of the family and I was asked to bring a dessert that the kids would enjoy. I decided to make snowmen cupcakes. I used chocolate chips (turned upside down) for the eyes and mini chocolate chips for the mouth. I took an orange slice candy and cut it into triangles to make a carrot nose. Everyone loved them...even the grown ups!

My first Memory Works Class

I did it! I held my first Memory Works class last month and it was amazing! I was so excited about my first class, I went all out. I designed three projects: a scrapbook layout, a Fall inspired card and a coordinating refrigerator magnet.

I wanted to make my first class extra special for my first students...so I placed water bottle placecards for each of them at their seats, right next to a package of homemade chocolate covered pretzels (from my mom...thanks Mom!).

By the end of the night, Allison, Angela and Jennifer wound up altering my project designs with their own personal touches and style... I loved it! They weren't afraid to take risks and really got creative. Watching this unfold, was the highlight of the evening for me.

Getting Creative with SCENTSY

Tonight, I got a little creative decorating a warmer for my scrapbooking studio. The colors of the rub-ons matched my room perfectly and it was so easy to do: Cut out the rub-ons you like, position them on the warmer wherever you want and rub them on using the Scentsy rub-on tool. That's it!

I recently became a demonstrator with Memory Works. I will now be hosting monthly classes in my scrapbooking studio in my home. (All classes will be designed with Memory Works products...names you trust: BasicGrey, Cosmo Cricket, We R Memory Keepers, Bo Bunny Press, 7 Gypsies & more!)

You don't have to know how to scrapbook and you may think you are "not creative"...but trust me, these classes are for everyone! I decided to do this because I want to share this hobby with others. I will teach you and you will see how easy it is. PLUS, it is tons of fun!!!

"Bunny Online"

Last night, we went to Dave & Buster's as a family and T redeemed some of her tickets for an adorable little bunny that hops, squeaks and wiggles his ears. She named him Snuggles. T quietly began playing in her playroom and after throwing a load of laundry in the machine, I popped in to check on her.

I found her putting the finishing touches on her own paper bunny (which she has since named Daisy). I couldn't get over her creation! She explained that she laid her bunny down on the paper and traced it. Then, she added a circle for his tail and drew in an eye. Then she colored it in. I can't tell you how excited it made me to see her figure out how to do this on her own.

T has really started to show signs of some fantastic creativity...and that added some sunshine to my rainy Fall morning for sure! --Jen

P.S. I asked Talia what I should title this blog entry and she suggested, "Bunny Online". I love it!

Sharing Creativity

So, like most parents, I have been collecting every piece of artwork T has created since she could hold a crayon, in her once, chubby little fingers. Over the past year, she has really enjoyed coloring and crafting. We started collecting all of these masterpieces in a large basket in her playroom, which began to overflow.

So, I had a thought. Why not share these masterpieces with others? I told T of my plan and she was completely on board. First, we sorted through the basket and saved our most memorable and favorite pieces. I couldn't let go of her first painting of a unicorn and she couldn't let go of anything that resembled a princess, a pony of the color pink. :0) But, by the end of the day, we had gathered 40 masterpieces to share with others.

I made a phone call to a local nursing home and made arrangements for us to visit with the residents. Today, we met with a large group before they had their BINGO game for the day. Talia individually handed out her creations to each of the residents and said, "I made this for you." They loved her...how could they not! And they were very thankful.

Mid-way through our time with the residents, Talia said, "Look Mommy, they are all smiling!" My heart melted and I thought to myself, "Now it can't get any better than that!"

On our way out, I felt so proud of T! I was beaming from ear to ear!

Happy as a PIG in mud!

T started Pre-K this year. She and her classmates are learning all about pigs. I wanted to help reinforce her lessons, so we took a trip to the library and found a bunch of pig themed books to read at bedtime.

Later that day, as I was about to walk my empty milk container to the recycling bin in the backyard, it hit me... we could make a pig out of this!!! And so, we did! Talia was completely engrossed in transforming this once white milk container into a pretty little pink friend.

But, about midway through her painting, she stopped and said, "Mommy, I want to make my pig muddy!" In that moment, I felt such pride... 'atta girl! There is that spark of creativity. So, where some moms may have said no to messing up such a pretty project, I let T go to town. And I have to admit, watching her "muddy" her pig (and herself), was the most fun, by far.

Parents, and even teachers, often squash creative ideas because "that is not how it is done" or because it is "too messy" or "because bananas aren't red, they are yellow." I should know, I used to be like them. But now, I make the effort to embrace my daughter's creative thoughts. Today, I hope you all find a way to do something creative with someone you love.

A new lease on life

Whew! These past five months have been a doozy! Unfortunately, I suffer from Crohn's disease and have been battling a flare up since January. I had TREMENDOUS back pain and fatigue which was often unpredictable. Good one day, laid up in bed the next...ugh! As you can imagine, this greatly impacted my creativity. :0(

After trials of a variety of medications, I was admitted into the hospital in late August and had surgery. And one month later, I am ecstatic to say that I am feeling great and like I have a new lease on life! I am on the road to recovery and healing at home, surrounded by my family and close friends.

I can't wait to start getting creative again...I've got the itch to create, so keep your eyes peeled for new additions to my blog. For now, here are a few photos of some altered clipboards I made for my nephews on a good day several weeks ago. The Melody of Autism

Almost exactly four years ago, I had decided to become a stay at home mom. I was living in the Bronx, with all my friends "over the bridge" and felt really isolated. I quickly knew I had to find some new friends fast. I found a local SAHM group and met Michele, who remains one of my closest friends to this day. Michele and I eventually went on to start our own SAHM group and that is where I met Faith.

Faith is probably one of the most remarkable women I have ever met. She is beautiful, articulate, funny and ambitious. She has decided to homeschool her children and is also raising a son with autism. She does everything with such grace and patience and I really admire her strength of spirit.

Recently, Faith shared with me that she was planning to hold a fundraising event called "The Melody of Autism" which was to celebrate the music and joy

inspired by autism. I knew I

wanted to help. I provided a

Creative Corner Designs gift

certificate as a gate prize and

created a guestbook for the

event. The event was amazing...

inspiring...moving. I found

myself fighting back tears with

each new speaker and each new

performance. The talent that

filled the room was phenomenal

and beyond that, the message

of optimism and faith was one

that I will never forget. It was

a day where everyone stopped

and recognized all the beauty and

blessings that autism has brought

into our lives.

Easter Inspired: 2,5,7,10 Boxes & More

Another Easter inspired creation... handmade
"2,5,7,10 Boxes". I couldn't get over how easy
these were to make. Basically, you take one
sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock and score it at
2", 5", 7" & 10" and cut it and you easily assemble it into an adorable box. They are the perfect size for party favors!

I designed these for a customer for
Easter. They are filled with chocolate Easter Egg

candy. As a special treat, I created scalloped

circles with a handstamped Easter design to cover York Peppermint Patties. I thought this would make it a bit more festive.

As a thank you gift for her business, I added just

a few details to a see-through pail.... white rub-ons from Stampin' Up, some ribbon and patterned scrapbooking paper. I purchased this
pail at A.C. Moore.

Altered Paint Cans

Well, I did it! I just finished my first order for altered paint cans. I had so much fun with this project and I am really pleased with the end result.

My customer requested that I design a creative Easter gift for each of the children in her family. I knew the paint cans would be a great alternative to a typical Easter basket. Each of them is unique and filled with candy and goodies.

My one saving grace during the hours in my scrapbooking studio was my Cricut! I am now even more of a Cricut addict. It made this project so much simpler and cost effective. Special shout out to my amazing hubby for buying it for me for my birthday! :0)

My favorite paint can is Hailey's. I am such a sucker for that shade of blue and I love the contrast with the black and pink.

Brianna's paint can was initially a struggle for me, but I think adding the stars (courtesy of my buddy the Cricut...lol) helped creative a very spirited cheerleading can.

Easter Creations

I have been feeling a little extra creative lately. I am enjoying trying new projects and altering items. I just finished an order for a dozen altered paint cans...they came out amazing. Photos to follow. In between, I also came up with a simple Easter gift idea for T's teachers.

I have been saving my glass sauce jars with the idea of making something with them eventually (shhh, don't tell my mom that I am still using jarred sauce! I know, my Italian ancestors are shuttering as I type). I decided the jars were the perfect item to re-purpose. I filled them with Cadberry Eggs and Peeps and decorated each of the jars with ribbon, hand stamped images
and a large bright flower embellishment.

I loved the vibrant, bold colors and how cheery they turned out. They were a hit with T's teachers. Enjoy! Wishing you all a Happy Easter and Passover season.

About a year ago, I received an email from Shellie, the owner of Craftbits.com. She had stumbled upon my website and really liked my work. So much so, that she invited me to join the craftbits team as a freelance writer. I'll never forget that feeling of recognition and pride... of someone noticing my work and appreciating it... and liking it so much they wanted me to share it with others.

The Gift of Creativity

From time to time, people will ask me, "Where did you get all of your creativity from?" Well, I think both of my parents are quite creative. My father is a carpenter, by trade. He has always had the innate talent of building and fixing things. My daughter quickly discovered that Grandpa is the "go to person" after he magically repaired a broken nesting doll of hers once. And honestly, it really does feel like magic! It's so interesting to see his mind at work; to watch him create something out of nothing or creatively save something that you thought was beyond repair. Recently, he transformed our unfinished basement into a bright, beautiful space for my in-laws. We cannot get over how amazing the finished product is.

My mother is beyond creative. Her creative talents are endless... sewing, drawing, cooking. She can play the piano, whip up 3 Halloween costumes on Halloween eve, and is hands down, the Queen of the hot glue gun. In raising her children, she always encouraged us to believe in our creativity and impressed upon us that it is okay to be different and not "settle." Her running one-liner has always been, "Don't pay for that... I can make that!" And, she can (and for alot cheaper, she might add)!

And now, this creativity is coming full circle as I watch my daughter and her grandparents together. "T" slept over Grandma and Grandpa's house on our anniversary. When we arrived to pick her up the following day, she and Grandma greeted us with a very special surprise. Together, they made us a wedding cake, adorned with a bride and groom cake topper they had created together. "T" was so proud of her creation and I couldn't help but feel giddy inside. It's thrilling to see "T" being creative and amazing to watch her mind at work.

So, getting back to that question... I think I get my creativity from my parents. I believe it is a gift they both gave me. No, I can't fix a broken fan like my dad can. And, no, my homemade tomato sauce doesn't even come close to my moms. We each have different creative talents. But, my mom and dad made a conscious decision to encourage me to be creative and to try new things. Their belief in me and my abilities made me feel confident, independent and proud. And this is a gift I certainly hope to give my daughter.

Everything begins and ends with LOVE...

Today was a wonderful Valentine's Day. I was delighted to receive a beautiful bouquet of tulips from my husband. (Pictured here, along with a card I designed for him)

Tomorrow, we will celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. During the process of planning our wedding, I started my first scrapbook about our relationship and engagement.

My inspiration? My 92-year-old Grandmother has a large scrapbook filled with greeting cards from my grandfather that span the years of their courtship and marriage. The first time I laid eyes on her scrapbook, I thought to myself, "I want to do that too." And so, that is where it all began.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. I hope the love that you have in your life inspires you to cherish your memories and be creative too!

I finally caved and started a blog!

Here I go... my first post. Have patience with me as I begin to blog. I hope this blog will be an easy way to keep you up to date with all the creative projects I am working on.

Our family recently moved to Long Island and with the move, came a brand new Creative Corner Designs scrapbooking room. Goodbye dining room table and storage bins on wheels...hello bright and sunny work area with tons of storage! I'll be posting some pics of the new space soon. I am on the hunt for the perfect crafting table as I write this.

I have to admit, having this new space has re-ignited my creativity. Pictured above are some magnetic calendars that I designed for my co-workers. They were the perfect holiday gift and super simple to make (I used beer coasters for the base and embellished them with decorative Stampin' Up paper & ribbon and some buttons I had in my stash). I have also created a few more altered items since then. Check back for those photos soon.

This blogging thing is kind of cool... uh oh, I may be hooked!
